The First Sunday in Lent – “Will You Go There?” [3/10/19]

Today’s Passage:  Luke 4:1-13

Opening Prayer:  Many of us walk through life uncertain of what comes next or of knowing what our next decision or choice is going to be.  Sometimes it is easier to hide from the truth or deceive ourselves into believing something that isn’t quite true about who we are, what we think, how we feel, or how we act.  Father God, during this Lenten season I pray you would send the Holy Spirit to help us take a deeper look into who we are.  May we see, no matter what we have done or who we think we are, that you love us.  May we choose to reflect upon who You are and who we really are when in Christ.  May we choose to step into the light of Your Son, Jesus.  May we be made new.  May we be refreshed.  These things I pray, in the name of Jesus, amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: “Will You Go There?” by Carla Pratt Keyes, Pastor of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia.

What’s so special about Lent? Carla Pratt Keyes says, “Lent provides us with a space to examine the stories we tell, to face the feelings behind those stories, to name the longing and pain and fear we feel and to learn from those feelings.” In Luke 4:1-13, Jesus enters the wilderness and has stories shouted at him by the devil. He has to face these stories and overcome them, just as we must in our wilderness seasons. On this first Sunday in Lent, Keyes, pastor of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond, Virginia, challenges us to think about what truths we might uncover if we dare to examine the stories we tell ourselves. “The question,” she asks, “is will we go there?”

Closing Song:  Looking closer at, and delving deeper into, who we really are is hard work, but God wants us to make the effort – to live courageously and with confidence because of Him.

Closing Prayer: Father God, may you give us the strength and courage to find those areas of who we are that need to change.  Help us to grow in ways that allow us to see how you see us.  May we see how Your plans are to prosper and grow us even more into the likeness of Jesus.  May You help us to faithfully carve out time to focus upon You and be guided by the Holy Spirit.  May we follow Christ more fully, in His name I pray.  Amen.

Will you go there.  Will you take a step into the unknown… a step into the wilderness?  If you do, you will not be alone.  God will be with you always.
