It’s About God – The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost [10/13/19]

Today’s Passage:  Psalm 111

Opening Prayer: Praise the Lord! I will extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly.   Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.  Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.   He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate.   He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.  He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations.  [Psalm 111:1-6 NIV]
Again, I say, praise the Lord! Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: It’s About God – The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost by Will Willimon, retired bishop in the United Methodist Church, a powerful preacher, and a prolific author.
How often do we hear the pastor congratulate us on Sunday morning for being in church and participating in worship? That’s exactly what Will Willimon, professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke Divinity School, acclaimed pastor, and author of over sixty books, does at the beginning of his sermon on Psalm 111. He says, “Psalm 111 is focused entirely, obsessed completely with God.” Listen as Willimon walks us through how this psalm explicitly defines God’s character and how it can make a difference in our lives by participating in the countercultural activity of attending worship each week.

Closing Song: “God Is” (Official Music Video) – Christian Singer Holly Starr: New Christian Music Video

Closing Prayer: The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.  He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever— holy and awesome is his name.  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding.  To him belongs eternal praise.  [Psalm 111:7-10 NIV]
Again, I say, praise the Lord!  Amen.
