Never Enough – The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost [10/27/19]

Today’s Passage:  Luke 18:9-14

Opening Prayer: Father God, thank You for reminding us that being right and righteous does not necessarily mean we are justified.  May we humble ourselves and ask You for mercy.  May we be justified – declared righteous by You.  In the name of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and for Your glory, I pray.  Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: Never Enough – The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost by David J. Lose, Senior Pastor of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, former seminary president and professor of preaching, and author of a popular blog called “In the Meantime.”
“Two men went up to the temple to pray…and one went down to his home justified. In between is a story that most of us find pretty straightforward,” says David Lose, Senior Pastor of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. This parable from Luke 18:9-14, the Pharisee and the tax collector, helps us understand the difference between being righteous and justified. Do you know the difference? Listen as Lose explains this difference and why it matters to our faith.

Closing Song: Matthew West – Mercy Is A Song (Acoustic) ft. Jordan Feliz

Closing Prayer: Father God, too often we think we need to be good enough to have a relationship with You.  Thanks You for reminding us that we just need to believe, accept, and receive.  Your acceptance is not based on our righteousness, but on us recognizing that we need You and want You.  May we no longer see the need to compare ourselves to others or to see ourselves as righteous.  May we instead be justified, or made righteous by You, because of Your great mercy toward us.  In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.
