When Your World Collapses – The Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost [11/17/19]

Today’s Passage:  Luke 21:5-19

Opening Prayer: Father God, at times we feel like our world is collapsing around us.  Change can be frightening.  Thank you for providing comfort and peace in times of trouble.  May You strengthen us and give us rest when are burdens seem heavy.  In the name of Jesus, by the power of the Holy Spirit, and to Your glory, I pray.  Amen.

Message [used with permission from A Sermon for Every Sunday]: When Your World Collapses – The Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost [11/17/19] by Michael Renninger, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia.
Imagine being called into your boss’s office and being told that you’re just not cut out for your position, the one you had dreamed about as a child. Michael Renninger pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Richmond, Virginia tells of how he was called into the office of the priest in charge at his monastery and told that he would never be a priest because he “did not have what it takes.” Renninger says, “my world collapsed around me.” He gives us a personal take on Luke 21:5-19, Jesus’s prediction of the destruction of the temple. Listen as he preaches on how painful endings are not the end and how this passage challenges us to look at the world differently.

Closing Prayer: Father God, You are the author of new beginnings.  Your Word teaches us how to live now and what is to come upon our death or the return of Jesus Christ.  May we trust in Your Word and not be fearful.  May we be forever grateful for the promise of eternal life.  May we remain faithful to You, Lord God, to the end of our days on this earth.  In the name of Jesus, I pray.  Amen.

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [11/17/19]

Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Ephesians 4:1-3 (NASB)

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [11/16/19]

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

We must truly serve those whom we appear to command; we must bear with their imperfections, correct them with gentleness and patience, and lead them in the way to heaven. Francois Fenelon

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [11/15/19]

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.
